It was a busy end to the year, so I haven't had the chance to do this yet. I like filling out this little questionnaire at the end of every year. So here's 2015 in review!
1. What did you do in 2015 that you'd never done before?
I got a Master's degree!
2. Did you keep your new years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
Kind of. I have started taking better overall care of myself, which is pretty much my same resolution for this year.
3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
Not that I'm aware of!
4. Did anyone close to you die?
Well I found out long after the fact that one of my great-aunts passed away. Really though it's more a relative who has changed so much in a negative way that the person I knew them as is dead. It's very difficult.
5. What countries did you visit?
I stayed in the US this year. I didn't have the time or the money to go out of the country!
6. What would you like to have in 2016 that you lacked in 2015?
More money? I'm at this point where I'm done with school and I have a job, but I need to move this year and pay off my debts as soon as I can. So to be honest, more cash would help the most.
7. What dates from 2015 will remain etched upon your memory?
I successfully defended my thesis on April 16th. It was a Tuesday. That's the big one!
8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
It really was that Master's degree. I wasn't sure I would or could be successful in graduate school, but I did it! I think my next biggest success was getting a job three weeks after graduation.
9. What was your biggest failure?
I did really poorly at losing weight. But by the end of the year I had realized why, so something good came out of that failure.
10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
Thankfully, I didn't have any significant illnesses this year. Some minor things like migraines and gastroenteritis, but nothing serious.
11. What was the best thing you bought?
Nothing really stands out this year. I've bought some fun things but nothing gigantic and super special this year.
12. Whose behavior merited celebration?
My brother was incredibly generous to me this Christmas and it was amazing.
13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?
I'm pretty sure I answer the US Congress for this question every year. I'll add Donald Trump too, although his existence is mostly appalling. On a more personal level, one of my relatives, whom I was previously very close to, has acted in a way that can only be described as appalling and depressing.
14. Where did most of your money go?
Good old Hunziker Property Management for the rent. And now I pay more for gas since I commute.
15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
Going
home for Christmas. I hadn't seen most of my family for a year, and I'd worked really hard and had no vacation time prior to that.
16. What song will always remind you of 2015?
Maybe Fight Song by Rachel Platten.
17. Compared to this time last year, you are:
Happier or sadder: Happier for sure.
Thinner or fatter: A teeny tiny bit thinner, but we're talking like four pounds.
Richer or poorer: Poorer. Way poorer. Being an adult is expensive.
18. What do you wish you'd done more of?
Pushing myself to see friends. I'm not a total hermit but I am very introverted, so sometimes it's difficult for me to get myself out there.
19. What do you wish you'd done less of?
Binge eating. But surprise, I have an eating disorder so yeah.
20. How will you be spending Christmas?
I went home for Christmas and spent it with my family. I wouldn't have it any other way.
21. What was your favorite month of 2015?
May, because I was done with my degree and passed, and all the paperwork was done and in, and no one could take that away from me.
22. Did you fall in love in 2015?
No. Unless you count with Hannibal.
23. How many one-night stands?
None. Don't do those.
24. What was your favorite TV program?
Hannibal. Although the first half of the third season was kind of crap. It's the only show I actually bothered to watch on telly though. Usually I just watch random weird shit on Netflix or Youtube.
25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
I don't hate anybody, but I do have a new aggravating coworker. I'm pretty sure that's par for the course with being employed though.
26. What was the best book you read?
I really enjoyed reading Silence of the Lambs, Hannibal, and Red Dragon.
27. What was your greatest musical discovery?
Spotify has Bing Crosby on it!
28. What did you want and get?
A couple plants, some games, and my fricking student loan paid off for me!
29. What did you want and not get?
Copious amounts of free money, a salary that I think I'm actually worth, a house.
30. What was your favorite film of this year?
The Wicker Man! The original with Sir Christopher Lee.
31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
I turned 28 and I honest to god do not remember. I think I had to work. Dan and I probably went out to eat.
32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
Starting with a much higher salary. I've spent a lot of time being stressed about money, so having that load off of my shoulders would have been great.
33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2015?
Wear clothes? I work in a lab, so there's not room for much fashion. Safety first.
34. What kept you sane?
My cats, my family, and playing video games.
35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
Anthony Hopkins. Also had a Peter Cushing phase, is that weird because he's dead? I hope not.
36. What political issue stirred you the most?
I was really happy when the Supreme Court legalized gay marriage. Otherwise politics is the usual depressing mess.
37. Who did you miss?
My parents, my brother, and all of my extended family. Going home once or twice a year is hard on me. I don't see them nearly enough.
38. Who were the best new people you met?
Jo is cool people! She's a lot of fun.
39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2015:
I am pretty damn smart and capable. More capable than I think.
40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year:
I'm not one to believe in magic/ But I sometimes have a second sight/ I'm not one to go pointing my finger/ When I radiate more heat than light -RUSH, Presto
This blog used to be called Grad School and Gardening, because I was in grad school and like to garden. Now I have a real job! So now this blog is mostly about gardening, but also my life, my cats, and occasionally science.

2013 In Review and my resolutions for 2014
First off, I'm going to look back on 2013. It was a weird year; a lot of ups and downs.
1. What did you do in 2013 that you'd never done before?
I visited Madison, WI for the first time to see my brother. Otherwise I had a pretty normal year. I did start trading plants and seeds too, and getting involved in the gardening communities on facebook, which is pretty cool.
2. Did you keep your new years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I don't think I did, because it was probably to lose weight. I didn't gain any weight but I didn't lose any either.
3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
My cousin Jessica did, at the end of October.
4. Did anyone close to you die?
This year I have escaped without any deaths from close friends or relatives. One of my great uncles is not in good health though, and I don't know how much longer he'll be around.
5. What countries did you visit?
I stayed in the US this year. I don't have the time to go out of country right now.
6. What would you like to have in 2014 that you lacked in 2013?
The feeling of inner strength and confidence. I really lost that part of the way through 2013 and once gone, it's hard to get it back. I'd also like to finish my time in academia forever this year.
7. What dates from 2013 will remain etched upon your memory?
Unfortunately I will probably always think about some difficult work conversations when I look back on this year.
8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
My success at having a container garden and expanding my indoor garden to a ridiculous amount of plants! I started with just a few plants and it's gotten crazy!
9. What was your biggest failure?
Communication failure at work, although that was at most only half my fault. I do tend to feel more to blame for things than is really the case.
10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
I fell in the parking lot in February and busted my elbow. I did two months of physical therapy to try and correct that.
11. What was the best thing you bought?
Every plant I bought has been a great purchase so far. I also bought some shop lights to set up a good indoor lighting area for my cacti and other high light plants. I didn't have too many big purchases this year, at least not that I remember. Did I get my PS3 this year or last year? If I got that this year then that was a good choice too.
12. Whose behavior merited celebration?
I really think that my boyfriend did the best this year. He worked very hard and overcame some stupid shit this year.
13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?
I notice that last year I said the US Congress. My answer is the same this year too.
14. Where did most of your money go?
Good old Hunziker Property Management for the rent.
15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
Going home for Christmas. It was such a long year, and such difficulty in the last few months, that going home was a huge thing for me.
16. What song will always remind you of 2013?
I don't think there really is one. I don't usually have an anthem or anything like that.
17. Compared to this time last year, you are:
Happier or sadder: A little happier, I think.
Thinner or fatter: Exactly the same.
Richer or poorer: Poorer, but not by much. I need to figure out that whole Roth IRA thing.
18. What do you wish you'd done more of?
I wish I had gotten out into nature more. Dan and I do a lot of hiking, but I wish I had gone more by myself too, especially since the summer was so mild.
19. What do you wish you'd done less of?
Eating pizza. I am on a pizza moratorium to break this habit.
20. How will you be spending Christmas?
I went home for Christmas and spent it with my family. I wouldn't have it any other way.
21. What was your favorite month of 2013?
Any month prior to August was pretty good.
22. Did you fall in love in 2013?
Yes. Although Dan and I are keeping it casual, there are feelings involved.
23. How many one-night stands?
None. Don't do those.
24. What was your favorite TV program?
Intervention finished up this year, which was a bummer. Ghost Hunters and Ghost Adventures are still my guilty pleasures. I don't really have many TV programs that I follow.
25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
Nope. There are certainly some people I'm more aggravated by, but nothing that crosses into actual hatred.
26. What was the best book you read?
Way back in January I read the very last Wheel of Time book. I also read all of HP Lovecraft this year.
27. What was your greatest musical discovery?
Didn't have one.
28. What did you want and get?
Plants! Many many plants. So many plants.
29. What did you want and not get?
I did not move as far along in my degree program as I wanted or expected.
30. What was your favorite film of this year?
Hellraiser! Okay, it's old but I watched it for the first time this year. I loooove Hellraiser.
31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
I turned 26. I don't think I did anything super special. Dan took me out to dinner and we went hiking, and I opened my box of presents from my parents.
32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
Being done with school. I am so over school. I am ready to leave academia like whoa. I want to be done.
33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2013?
Same old, same old. Although I did start attempting to wear makeup regularly, and I have started hating pants and wearing more dresses off work.
34. What kept you sane?
Dan, my kitties, and playing video games! Lots of Animal Crossing and Pokemon.
35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
Well I didn't really pay too much attention to celebrities, but I've always been fond of Robert Downey Jr.
36. What political issue stirred you the most?
The government shutdown really pissed me off, because it was so unnecessary and wasted everyone's time and prevented people from getting paid.
37. Who did you miss?
My parents, my brother, and all of my extended family. Going home once or twice a year is hard on me.
38. Who were the best new people you met?
Well I did get to know a few people a lot better, like Brandon, Leah, and Christine.
39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2013:
That I need to not take the responsibility for everything in the world, and that I am not responsible for everything going right.
40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year:
One day I'm here, I'm on top of the world/And the next it's falling in on me/I can get back on, I can get back on-Far Cry, Rush
And on that note, let's talk about my resolution for 2014. It's to take care of myself. I have done such a crap job of taking care of myself, and put my own self care last for too long. So I'm taking care of me this year. I am eating healthy, being active, and putting aside the time and money to care for myself. I've started by chopping off 12 inches of hair and getting it styled today. This year is all about caring for me.
1. What did you do in 2013 that you'd never done before?
I visited Madison, WI for the first time to see my brother. Otherwise I had a pretty normal year. I did start trading plants and seeds too, and getting involved in the gardening communities on facebook, which is pretty cool.

2010 In Review
I like doing these questions every year, because it's easier than trying to sum up the whole year without any prompts.
1. What did you do in 2010 that you'd never done before?
I got in a car accident. I joined a gym. I visited someone in the hospital.
2. Did you keep your new years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
Not really. My weight plateaued this year.
3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
Not anyone particularly close to me, although I know several acquaintances who popped out babies.
4. Did anyone close to you die?
Yes, my great aunt Barbara.
5. What countries did you visit?
Canada.
6. What would you like to have in 2011 that you lacked in 2010?

My great aunt Barbara died on Memorial Day. I paid off my student loans on December 2nd.

Paying off my student loans completely.
9. What was your biggest failure?
Not losing thirty pounds.
10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
Not anything serious.
11. What was the best thing you bought?
This is a hard one. I didn't buy anything huge and awesome this year, but I bought a bunch of smaller things that all added up to awesome. I guess the Absolute Sandman volumes are pretty awesome, although I still need to get #1.
12. Whose behavior merited celebration?
Nobody did anything amazing, so I'm not sure.
13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?
The crazy people who chased my mom down the street after their dog bit her. It was weird.
14. Where did most of your money go?
To the government and the Harper cafeteria. Oh, and to the gasoline companies.

Making my final student loan payment. Seeing Christopher Plummer in the Tempest!

20. How will you be spending Christmas?
I spent it with my family. It was difficult because my grandfather is ill.
21. What was your favorite month of 2010?
Probably August, because we went to Stratford and I got to see Christopher Plummer in the Tempest. And I sat in the front row.
22. Did you fall in love in 2010?
Nope. It's slim pickin's out in Detroit. Also, I'm probably moving soon, so it'd be a bit stupid to start a relationship right now. Actually, I was pretty happy being single this year.
23. How many one-night stands?
None. I don't do one-night stands.
24. What was your favorite TV program?
Doctor Who-I finally finished the last season with David Tennant. Intervention-it's my guilty pleasure. Deadliest Catch-I cried and cried. Mythbusters-yay science!

No. I don't have a lot of people on my hate list. Hate's a very strong word.
26. What was the best book you read?
Towers of Midnight by Robert Jordan/Brandon Sanderson. I'm peeved that I have to wait an entire year to get the next book.
27. What was your greatest musical discovery?
Is it bad that I have to say the pop station on the radio? Lady Gaga is my extremely guilty pleasure that I don't tell anyone about because it's so embarrassing. But to make up for it, my brother introduced me to Dream Theater.
28. What did you want and get?
Money. Lots of money. Although getting it by having my great aunt die was not really what I envisioned.

The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus was my favorite. Also with Christopher Plummer!
31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?

32. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
Not having to commute. I have realized that I hate commuting.
33. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2010?
Jeans, nicer than t-shirt shirts at work, boots. I'm slightly trending towards steampunk. A little bit of country, a little bit rock'n'roll, but all work appropriate? I'm waiting to start changing my style until I'm in a size I'm happier with.
34. What kept you sane?
Weekends. My family.
35. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
Robert Downey Jr.

Mike Byrd at fencing.
39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2010:

Watching DVDs that I'm behind on. Making jewelry. Working out.
19. What do you wish you'd done less of?
Work. I like my job, but I'm pretty sure that I'll always wish I could get paid to do whatever I want.
25. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
29. What did you want and not get?
A laptop. I'm waiting until I know I'm going to school to get one.
30. What was your favorite film of this year?
The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus was my favorite. Also with Christopher Plummer!
31. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
I turned 23, and I honestly don't remember what I did. I do, however, remember having the most awesome ice cream cake in the world. It was awesome because it had dinosaurs and a volcano on it.
36. What political issue stirred you the most?
The DADT repeal. I'm so glad it finally got repealed. All the arguing about it was so stupid.
37. Who did you miss?
My Iowa friends, especially Mike and Tessa.
38. Who were the best new people you met?
Mike Byrd at fencing.
39. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2010:
Don't live far away from your place of work. Commuting sucks.
40. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year:
One day I'm here, I'm on top of the world/And the next it's falling in on me/I can get back on, I can get back on-Far Cry, Rush
